The second edition of the Lisbon International Biennial of Contemporary Jewellery took place between April and September 2024, with the theme Political Jewellery. Jewels of Power and the title Madrugada, inspired by a poem by Sophia de Mello Breyner.
This year marked the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April revolution, a moment that still resonates deeply in Portugal's values of democracy, freedom, and equality—values that are once again under threat globally. Jewelry, historically linked to power—whether monetary, political, or spiritual—has always carried symbolism, from royal crowns to contemporary pieces that comment on social and political issues. The event provided an opportunity to explore how jewelry, as an art form, can be a powerful medium for political and critical expression, reflecting on freedom, power, and the times we live in.
Emerge was a parallel, collective exhibition integrated into the Biennial of Contemporary Jewellery in Lisbon. Six resident jewelry artists of Fábrica Moderna poured their hearts and souls into creating 18 pieces that remind us of the possibility of emerging from oppression.
Emerge encapsulates the transformative odyssey from constraint to freedom, spotlighting a thoughtfully curated array of works embodying resilience and evolution. This exhibition delves into the powerful interplay between confinement and liberation, beckoning viewers to immerse themselves in the profound release and empowerment born from shattering barriers. With each piece, we witness the emergence of fresh perspectives and possibilities, celebrating the unwavering human spirit's pursuit of liberation.
In the Scarred yet free collection, each piece embodies the duality of constraint and freedom, capturing the essence of resilience and transformation. Through the medium
of charcoal, representing the scorched remnants of past trials, these pieces reveal the beauty and light that can arise from adversity. The charcoal elements, dark and raw, contrast with the shimmering highlights of precious metals, stones and pearls, symbolizing the enduring light of the human spirit. It serves as a constant reminder that even in the face of hardship, one can emerge with strength and brilliance.
